Why Your Dog Needs a 'Job' at Home

👱‍♂️
By Dr. Wag

Most breeds we own today were bred for a specific purpose: herding, retrieving, guarding, or hunting. Today, their only job is waiting for us to finish watching Netflix. This lack of purpose leads to boredom, which manifests as destructive behavior, excessive barking, or anxiety.

A "job" doesn't mean they need to herd sheep in your living room. A job can be eating their dinner out of a puzzle toy instead of a bowl. It can be a 10-minute training session learning a new trick. Mental fatigue is just as important as physical fatigue.

The Importance of Doggy REM Sleep

👱‍♂️
By Dr. Wag
Sleeping Dog Illustration

Dogs need sleep. A lot of it. The average adult dog needs 12-14 hours of sleep a day. But it's not just about quantity; it's about quality. Just like humans, dogs need uninterrupted REM sleep to process memories, learn new behaviors, and recover physically.

Create a safe, quiet sleeping zone for your dog where they know they won't be bothered. Teach children in the house never to wake a sleeping dog. If your dog is twitching or "running" in their sleep, don't wake them up! They are dreaming, and their brain is doing important work.

How to Stop Leash Pulling (Without Force)

👩🏽‍p
By Sarah (Trainer)
Dog with Leash Illustration

We've all been there. You step outside, and suddenly your 40lb dog turns into a sled dog pulling you down the sidewalk. Leash pulling is the number one complaint among dog owners. Pulling is self-reinforcing. When they pull and you walk forward, they learn that pulling equals forward momentum.

The Fix: Stop moving. The second there is tension on the leash, you stop and become a tree. Do not yank them back. Just wait. Eventually, your dog will turn around and look at you, wondering why you stopped. When they do, the leash goes slack. Praise them, and start walking again. It takes immense patience, but it works.
